NOM Certification for Mexico: a complete guide for electronics and telecommunications

We explain what the Official Mexican Standard (NOM) is, which regulations apply to your product, and how we support you throughout the process — working directly and indirectly with Product Certification Bodies (OCP), accredited laboratories, and the CRT.

What is the Official Mexican Standard (NOM)?

NOMs are mandatory technical standards in Mexico, issued by agencies such as the Secretaría de Economía and the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT).

Unlike a voluntary standard, a NOM is mandatory: if your product falls within its scope, you must demonstrate compliance before it can be imported, manufactured, or sold in Mexican territory — regardless of any prior international certifications. For electronics and telecommunications, NOMs cover everything from electrical safety to the homologation of equipment that connects to public networks, as well as the labeling that reaches the end consumer.

1

Market access

Without the corresponding NOM, your product cannot be legally imported or sold in Mexico. It's an entry requirement, not an optional step.

2

Safety and trust

Electronics NOMs verify that the product doesn't pose electrical or radio-frequency risks to the end user.

3

Avoid contingencies

Selling without certification exposes the product to customs holds, fines, or removal from the market by the authority.

MOTS is a specialized management firm for NOM certificates for import and commercialization in Mexico. We don't replace official bodies: we coordinate and follow up on your process, working directly and indirectly with Product Certification Bodies (OCP), accredited testing laboratories, and the CRT, so your process moves forward smoothly.

Answering your NOM certification questions

Is NOM certification mandatory to sell in Mexico?

Yes. Virtually every electronic or telecommunications product imported, manufactured, or sold in Mexico must demonstrate compliance with the applicable NOM(s) before it can be sold.

What happens if I sell a product without the corresponding NOM?

The product can be held at customs, fined, or pulled from the market by the authority. Certifying on time avoids logistics delays and legal contingencies.

Does MOTS issue the NOM certificate directly?

No. MOTS is a specialized management firm: we coordinate the process, working directly and indirectly with Product Certification Bodies (OCP), accredited laboratories, and the CRT, so you obtain your certificate efficiently and correctly.

How long does the process take?

It varies depending on the applicable regulation, product type, and available documentation. We provide a personalized estimate after the initial diagnosis.

What documentation do I need to get started?

Generally: a user manual (ideally in Spanish), technical data sheets, electrical or RF diagrams, and product photographs. We confirm the exact list based on your case.

Do you work with companies outside Mexico?

Yes. We frequently work with international manufacturers, importers, and distributors looking to enter the Mexican market.
